The following eight packages-all examples of the diversity and ingenuity of well-designed packaging-will be featured at Pack Expo Las Vegas 2011, to be held September 26-28 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Some will be showcased in The Brand Zone, a special area of the show dedicated to materials and containers that shape winning brands-innovations for consumer packaged goods companies (CPGs), private label manufacturers and package designers looking for that crucial piece of the branding puzzle.

Spring herbs grow in biodegradable planter
Metrolina Greenhouses’ spring herbs now grow in biodegradable paper ReadyGrow planters from Sonoco (Booth # 5607).The one-quart planters were released in early March. Made from 100 percent recycled paperboard produced in Sonoco’s paper mills, ReadyGrow planters are conveyable and sustainable in a commercial greenhouse environment and biodegrade in soil within 180 days of planting. The patent-pending design is user-friendly and allows consumers to plant the entire container in the ground, eliminating mess and reducing the amount of plastic being sent to landfills. || Read more

DuPont announces the winners of its 23rd DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation and honors packaging industry projects that exhibit collaborative innovation across an array of geographies and market segments. Winning projects of the independently judged contest demonstrated these innovations in a variety of applications, including a recycling/upcycling process and development or use of sustainable packaging materials. || Read more

Compostable packaging. Two words that, for much of 2010, brought cringes to the faces of American packaging designers. Why? We all know what a disaster the first Sunchips compostable packaging launch was, at least in the U.S. It was the first high-profile mainstream effort to do so, and consumers crumpled it quickly because of the high decibel bag. Leatherhead, U.K. — Global PET beer bottle consumption is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 5.3% to reach 7.7 billion bottles by 2015, according to a multi-client study published by Pira International. The study says PET beer bottle consumption totalled 6.0 billion units in 2010, which represents 2.0% of the 293 billion world beer packaging market volumes (633ml pack equivalents). || Read more

green packaging solutions

A survey, commissioned by Cintas Corp., found that 84 percent of U.S. adults prefer to do business with a company that uses green cleaning products and practices.

“Today’s consumers are environmentally-conscious and expect the businesses they patronize to use green cleaning practices,” says Mike Thompson, senior vp, Cintas Facility Services. “This research affirms that using environmentally-friendly cleaning products and practices has a positive impact on the environment and can help drive repeat business.” || Read more

Plastic Packaging

New research from Pira Intl. finds the market for rigid plastic packaging offers best growth prospects in the European food/drink packaging market in terms of volume terms. The market segment, which includes plastic bottles, plastic trays and rigid plastic pots and tubs, is expected to enjoy a combined compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.7 percent from 2010 to 2015, which almost double the 1.9 percent growth predicted for the European food and drink packaging sector over all.


In 2010 food and drink consumption in the 12 countries/regions covered by the Pira study totaled just over 574 million tonnes. The projected CAGR for 2010-15 is 0.6 percent for all food and drink consumption, but 1.9 percent for packaged food and drink consumption. This is an increase on growth of 1.7 percent between 2005 and 2010 and equates to 1,254 units per person per year. || Read more
